According to ancient scriptures, the demon king Bali had conquered all three worlds through his penance and valor. He was a charitable and righteous king, yet his growing influence threatened the existence of the devas (celestial beings). Indra, the king of devas, and the other gods sought Lord Vishnu’s help.
Lord Vishnu took birth as Vamana from the womb of Mata Aditi. He appeared as a dwarf Brahmin boy carrying an umbrella and kamandal (water pot). Seeing His divine radiance, everyone bowed to Him in reverence.
Seeking Alms from King Bali
When King Bali was performing a grand yajna (ritual sacrifice), Lord Vamana arrived at his court. Bali welcomed Him respectfully and said He could ask for anything. Vamana asked for merely three paces of land.
Bali’s guru, Shukracharya ji, warned him that this boy was no ordinary Brahmin, but Bali resolved to keep his word. He said that if the Lord Himself had come asking for alms, it was his good fortune.
Taking the Cosmic Form and Measuring the Three Worlds
As soon as Bali offered the ceremonial water, Lord Vamana assumed a gigantic cosmic form. His body became so vast that His head touched the heavens. With the first step, He measured the entire Earth, and with the second step, He measured the heavenly realm.
Now no space remained for the third step. To keep his word, King Bali offered his own head. Lord Vishnu, in His Vamana form, placed His foot on Bali’s head and sent him to Patala Lok (the netherworld). However, pleased with his devotion, the Lord made him the king of Patala Lok.
